When we opened Rasam on November 3rd 2003, I had no idea how many dear friends I would make over the years. Many of our regulars have become such close friends and have allowed Rasam to celebrate their milestones with them throughout the years. I also did not realise what a fabulous community we were joining. From the locals to all the local businesses, we truly feel a part of the Glasthule community and what a fabulous place it is.
I hope you don’t mind, but celebrating being open for ten years made me recollect so many occasions over the past few years and I would just like to take this opportunity to share a few of them with you.
Stewart Kenny (founder of paddypower.com) was the first Irish customer I served way back in 1990. It was at Chandni restaurant on Pembroke Road, where we were cooking and sampling our menu, as we were due to open the restaurant to the general public a week later on 12th April 1990. Suddenly I saw Stewart peeping through the glass window, with his ten year old son Nicki (who then only came up to his waist probably, but now is a 6.3ft tall guy) and I just opened the door, introduced myself and offered both of them to try the first flavours. That was then and 23 plus years later, he has always been the very first guest at every place I have opened since in Dublin, including Rasam. He has celebrated every milestone birthday with me since, including his 50th in Jaipur and his 60th in Rasam. How fitting therefore, that he came for dinner on our 10th birthday to help us celebrate.
Tom Kennedy, who co-founded Web Reservations International ( www.webresint.com ) and www.hostelworld.com has been a valued regular over the past ten years. One night we will always remember fondly was him celebrating his 40th Birthday in Rasam in 2006. A little piece of Rasam history we treasure.
There have been so many milestone birthdays celebrated at Rasam, ranging from 10ths to 90ths. Don Tidey had a surprise Bollywood 70th party, not to mention Claire O’Grady, Lise Hand, Stephen Rae, Rosanna Davison, Chris De Burgh & Miriam O’Callaghan who have all celebrated milestones at Rasam. I remember them all fondly and look forward to celebrating a 100th birthday with a guest someday soon hopefully.
We have also played a small part in some historic days. Ajai Chopra and his IMF team, all made their way from the Merrion Hotel, through a snowy Dublin, to eat at Rasam following the signing of the IMF deal in the Accountant General’s office. Mr. Chopra was gracious enough to tell me the meal was excellent. We also had the pleasure of welcoming back to Rasam, one member of that team, Mr Ashoka Mody (ex Mission Chief for Ireland) and his lovely wife, a few months ago
So many memories, but really I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of our customers who have made the past ten years possible. We treasure each and every guest at Rasam and look forward to serving you for the next 10 years
